David Toon Retires

This is big news that I just saw on the league site. Veteran, future Hall of Famer, David Toon, is retiring. What a career this guy has had!

He spent his entire career with one team, and when his age finally started catching up with him, he called it quits. He did it the right way all the way around.

Thursday, October 12th, 1978: Frenzy Toon Hanging up His Spikes
David Toon of the Frenzy is hanging it up. The veteran starting pitcher reportedly told team officials yesterday that he would not return for another season.

"The time has come for me to give up a game I love dearly, but the time is right. Baseball has been good for me and I hope I have been good for baseball."

"While we are disappointed David will not be playing for us next year, I have a tremendous amount of respect for him and the way he went about this decision," said the Falls Church general manager.

His lifetime totals give Toon 315 victories and 161 defeats with a 2.60 ERA.

I'm sure Jarien is glad that Toon decided to retire. He was tailing off, and Jarien kept him so he'd retire from FC. I did the same with Allshouse, who is also retiring in the same fashion this season. Toon is more of a legend though, certainly one of the best. 315 victories is a ton of wins!

Yeah, the quote I (apparently) gave for the news article cited in the article is the "official" version of the quote. The truth is, it's been great, but it's definitely time to retire, and I am not in any way disappointed that Toon will not be pitching for us next year. My only regret is that he didn't retire last year... Now, we can get around to that discussion of renaming the Howlett award...
