1978 Awards Announced

The Howlett, Ritz, Rookie of the Year, and Gold Glove awards were announced today, and it looks like a deserving crew this year.

Friday, November 3rd, 1978: Weber Tops Best Hitter List
What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 1978 Ritz Award in the Mays League. It had already been a very special season for Boston's Robert Weber, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake.

All season long Robert Weber gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .296 as he collected 174 hits, 20 doubles, 7 triples, 46 home runs and 129 RBIs.

Friday, November 3rd, 1978: WL Top Hitter, 1978 Choice Is Badillo
Oswaldo Badillo has been around Backyard Baseball League enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 1978 season, he's taking home the Ritz Award in the Williams League.

The St. Louis right fielder put up a batting average of .400 with 21 doubles, 5 triples, 51 home runs and 133 RBIs.

Thursday, November 2nd, 1978: Best ML Pitcher Announced
The Howlett Award for 1978 has been presented and the Mays League winner is Chad Nieman of Orchard Park.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Nieman. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Blizzard star told reporters.

Nieman excelled with an impressive 20-6 record in 35 starts. In 265.2 innings he yielded 190 hits and 25 walks, while striking out 343 and compiling a fine 2.41 ERA.

Thursday, November 2nd, 1978: Howlett Award Announced, Winner is Facer
With speculation about his retirement gaining steam last offseason, Sunburn ace Justin Facer had something to prove. He proved it in award-winning style as he accepted the Williams League Howlett Award today.

The veteran South Beach hurler posted a record of 19 wins and 7 losses this year with a 1.98 ERA. In 32 starts he struck out 251 and walked 31 in 245.2 innings.

Wednesday, November 1st, 1978: Fralick Presented ML Rookie of the Year Award
Todd Fralick, center fielder of Honshu, was the cream of the freshman crop in the Mays League and today he received the 1978 Rookie of the Year Award.

He played in 148 games, compiling a .276 batting average with 173 hits, 32 home runs, 59 walks and a .338 on-base percentage. Fralick also chipped in 90 RBIs and scored 111 times.

Wednesday, November 1st, 1978: Crisp This Year's Top Rookie
James Crisp put together some impressive numbers for Superior to garner enough votes for the Williams League Rookie of the Year Award.

The Moo right fielder took the honor by hitting .281 in 144 games this season and finishing with 159 hits, 26 home runs, 72 RBIs and 84 runs scored.
